Moissanite vs Diamond: What You See, What You Pay, What Lasts

Short answer: in everyday indoor light most people cannot tell a well cut moissanite from a diamond across a table. In direct sun moissanite shows more rainbow color. A diamond is a little harder and holds some resale value; moissanite gives you the same size for a small part of the price. The rest of this guide is the detail behind that, so you can decide with your own budget and plans in mind.

What you actually see

Indoors, at a normal distance

This is where you spend most of your day: an office, a restaurant, a living room. A round moissanite and a round diamond of the same size both look white and bright. Moissanite bends light a little more (refractive index 2.65 against 2.42), so it returns plenty of light, and its flashes carry a bit more color. At arm's length that difference is hard to name. Most people see a bright round stone and stop there.

In direct sun

Sunlight is where the two separate. Moissanite splits white light into colors more than twice as strongly as diamond (dispersion 0.104 against 0.044). Outside on a sunny day a moissanite throws lots of small rainbow flashes, sometimes called a disco ball effect. A diamond sparkles too, but its flashes read as whiter. Some people love the color; others want the cooler white look. It is a matter of taste, not quality.

Size changes the picture

The bigger the stone, the more visible the fire. At 0.5 to 1 ct (5 to 6.5 mm) moissanite and diamond look very close. From about 2 ct (8 mm) up, the rainbow is easier to notice, especially in sun and in phone photos with flash. If you want a large stone and prefer a white look, keep this in mind.

Color and the old reputation

Early moissanite from the late 1990s and 2000s often had a faint yellow or gray tint, and some of the reputation comes from those stones. Today's colorless moissanite is graded on the same letter scale as diamond. Ours are graded D, the top of that scale, so the stone itself looks icy white.

The one optical tell

Moissanite is doubly refractive: light entering it splits into two rays. Looking into some stones at an angle with a loupe, you can see the back facet edges slightly doubled. Round stones are cut so you look down the axis where this does not show, which is why you will not notice it face up without magnification.

What you pay for the same look

Prices below are for a round stone that looks like 1 ct. Diamond prices are September 2026 averages from public price trackers for the stone alone; a setting adds to that. Our moissanite prices are for a finished ring in 925 sterling silver.

• Mined diamond, 1 ct, G color, VS2 clarity, excellent cut: about $4,000 to $6,000 online for the stone, more in a store.
• Lab-grown diamond, 1 ct, similar grade: about $650 to $1,500 for the stone. Lab diamond prices have fallen every year since about 2020, so expect this range to keep moving.
• Moissanite, 1 ct DEW, D color, VVS1: $50 to $90 for a complete ring in our moissanite engagement rings, with a GRA report in the box.

To be fair to the comparison: a diamond ring is usually set in 14K or 18K gold or platinum, and ours are set in sterling silver. That keeps our prices low, and it also means our rings are not the same thing as a gold ring with a diamond. If you want a gold setting later, a jeweler can reset a moissanite.

Why DEW matters when you compare

Moissanite is about 10 percent lighter than diamond, so a stone that looks like 1 ct weighs less than 1 ct. That is why moissanite is sold in DEW, diamond equivalent weight. When you compare, look at millimeters: a 1 ct round diamond and a 1 ct DEW round moissanite are both about 6.5 mm across.

How they hold up

Diamond is the hardest natural material, 10 on the Mohs scale. Moissanite is 9.25, harder than sapphire (9) and well above cubic zirconia (about 8), so it will not scratch from daily wear. Hardness is not the whole story, though. Diamond has cleavage planes and can chip if it takes a hard knock at the wrong angle. Moissanite has no easy cleavage direction and resists chipping well.

Moissanite does not get cloudy or change color over time. Any stone looks dull when lotion and soap build up behind it; warm water, mild soap and a soft brush fix that in a minute. With our rings, the part that needs a little care is the metal: sterling silver can darken slowly, and a silver polishing cloth brings it back. Check the prongs once a year, as you would with any ring worn every day.

Can people tell the difference?

At a normal distance, almost nobody can. A jeweler can, in seconds. A basic thermal diamond tester measures how fast heat moves through the stone, and moissanite conducts heat much like diamond does, so a thermal tester can read it as diamond. A multi-tester adds an electrical conductivity check and shows moissanite for what it is. We think that is how it should be: our stones are moissanite, we sell them as moissanite, and your GRA report says so too.

Lab-grown and mined diamonds look the same to the eye and to a standard tester, because both are diamond. Telling them apart takes laboratory equipment, which is why lab-grown diamonds carry a grading report and often a laser inscription.

Which one should you choose?

• You want the look of a large, bright stone on a set budget. Moissanite gives you the most size and sparkle for the money, and a 2 ct look costs $70 to $80.
• You want a ring you can wear every day without worrying. Moissanite or lab-grown diamond. Both are hard enough for daily life, and losing or damaging one would not hurt the way losing a mined diamond would.
• It has to be a diamond. If the meaning for you or your partner is the word diamond, choose a lab-grown or mined diamond. A moissanite is beautiful, but it is not a diamond, and it should never be given as one.
• You think about resale or an heirloom. A mined diamond is the only one of the three with a real resale market, and even then you get back a part of the price.
• You prefer white sparkle in big sizes. Look at a diamond, or choose a moissanite under about 1.5 ct, where the fire stays subtle.

Plenty of couples do both: a moissanite engagement ring now, and a diamond for a later anniversary. There is no wrong answer if the choice is made with the facts in front of you.

Questions we get

Does moissanite look fake?
Not when it is well cut and colorless. The thing people notice is extra color in sunlight, which is the stone's nature, not a flaw.

Is moissanite cheaper than a lab-grown diamond?
Yes. A 1 ct look in moissanite costs a small part of a 1 ct lab-grown diamond, even with lab diamond prices falling.

Will moissanite pass a diamond tester?
A basic thermal tester can read it as diamond. A multi-tester identifies it as moissanite. We describe our stones as moissanite, always.

Does moissanite get cloudy over time?
No. If it looks cloudy, it needs a clean: warm water, mild soap and a soft brush.

What does the GRA report tell me?
