- The top of the colourless scale (D–E–F) — no yellow or grey cast next to a white metal.

Closure types
- Friction push back — the classic stud closure: slides on, holds firmly, easy on and off.
- Screw back — twists onto a threaded post; the most secure option, great for sleeping in or for valuable stones.
- Hinged huggie latch — clicks shut around the lobe; no separate back to lose.
- Lever / English back — for drop earrings: the lever locks behind the lobe and keeps the earring hanging straight.
